Facing accessibility issues and a growing student population, Hawthorne Gospel Church hired LAN Associates to design an addition for their iconic church and on campus academy. The proposed five-classroom addition with two multi-purpose spaces meets the church’s rising needs and provides an inspiring post-worship space outside of the Sanctuary.
The new addition is reminiscent of a bell tower as it rises high above the landscape for all those traveling along Route 208 to see. The new exterior design welcomes guests by highlighting the existing entrance with a terracing landscape and a patio, which is used for after service activities. The new multi-purpose rooms can be combined into one large space for additional services or as a general meeting space. ADA accessibility was added to the site, and a new monumental staircase allows worshippers to flow freely throughout the new and existing structures.
The project included improvements to the educational portion of the building, Hawthorne Christian Academy, which is a ministry of Hawthorne Gospel Church and is located on the site. The design includes new security improvements, flexible classroom spaces, a nursery for younger students and additional bathrooms for the growing student body. All the new classrooms maximize natural daylight and are equipped with the latest technologies.
As part of the project, LAN also provided civil engineering services for the conversion of a grass field to artificial turf, allowing the field to be used for extended play time without the risk of damage. LAN oversaw all design and construction efforts, which included 88,000 square feet of new artificial turf, improved field fencing, a new chain-link backstop, and a retaining wall to level the field.
