Orange County Landfill Transfer Station

Project Overview

In 2009 the Orange County Department of Public Works opened a 23,000 SF facility to temporarily store solid waste before transportation to regional landfills. LAN provided the conceptual building design, site design, associated utility connections, building code analysis. We also with assisted with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation permit application for the three-bay, pre-engineered, steel building. The new waste transfer station is located at Training Center Way in New Hampton, NY and replaces the old open-air facility which has serviced county residents since the 1980’s. The Orange County Landfill Transfer Station moves approximately 675 tons of solid waste per day.

The design involved construction of a new fully enclosed transfer building and realignment of traffic circulation routes for public use and commercial haulers. General reorganization of the complex provided queuing areas, more efficient circulation, and space for the future expansion of the main transfer building, while allowing continuous, uninterrupted operation of the existing facility during construction. The site design used a variety of storm water management practices to improve storm water runoff quality. The design implemented two storm water infiltration basins, grass channels, and a plunge pool to remove pollutants and regulate peak runoff flows while protecting downstream channels from erosion. The new facility operates a boiler that uses recycled waste oil to heat the floor at the entrances to the dumping areas, so the water from wet trash doesn’t freeze in winter and make the floor hazardous. Wastewater, known as leachate, is collected by floor drains and conveyed to a holding tank for disposal.
