A. Harriman “Thompson Farm” Restoration

Project Overview

LAN Associates was retained by the Orange County Historical Society to provide professional architectural and engineering services for the renovation of the historically significant “Brown House.” Located in the historic Hudson River Valley, the “Brown House” sits on the Thompson Farm, but was once part of the original Harriman Estate.

Maintaining the historical character and integrity of the building was paramount while upgrading and modernizing it. The existing wood-framed structure was shored and braced to prevent collapse and the entire house was raised to remove the original deteriorated fieldstone foundation support system. Although challenging, timber box cribbing and steel beams were used to elevate the structure to perform excavation and construct a new perimeter foundation system with footings.

The two-story, 2,680 sf building was completely gutted and renovated with new energy efficient mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. New finishes were installed throughout, including architectural doors, insulated windows, pre-finished clapboard siding, architectural moldings, trim boards, and asphalt shingle roofing.

The new design provides a similar layout but includes a more open, free flowing plan. There are two identical apartment units consisting of three bedrooms, one full and two half baths, living room, dining room, kitchen and laundry.
